Abstract

AGE DETERMINATION OF ROCKS BY MEANS OF MASS-SPECTROMETER

Summary

The author describes mass-spectrometer methods used for age determination of rocks by means of mass-spectrometer. This is an instrument working on the basis of selection of ions having various mass in a uniform magnetic field. When determining the age of rocks one uses natural radioactivity at some elements that are constituents of the earth's crust rocks. The article contains a description of several methods, a. o. thorium-lead, uranium-lead, potassium-calcium, potassium-argon and rubidium-strontium methods.
