ESTIMATE OF PHYSIC-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BENTONITES FROM JAWÓR, BY MEANS OF VARIOUS RESEARCH METHODS

Summary

The present paper gives the results of the researches of physic-mechanical properties of the bentonites occurring in the vicinities of Jawór. During examinations, standard methods of determining the granulometric composition of plasticity and fluidity boundaries for bentonites have critically been analyzed to show that the results obtained by means of these methods are laden with errors. In this connection, a pipette method has been applied during determination of granulometric composition, under an adequate treatment of the sample with stabilizer, whereas the examinations of consistency were made in plastometer of L. Wysokiński. In addition, the paper presents the results of special laboratory examinations which were carried on under natural conditions characteristic of the ground considered. These are: maximum humidity under loading, and interdependence between the internal friction angle and cohesion and the humidity. On account of a number of characteristic features of the bentonites, and of a necessity of using the adequate non-normalized research methods, the authors propose to introduce into the building ground classification a separate group of hydrophilic grounds within the class of non-cohesive grounds.
