Abstract

Hydrocarbon potential of Carboniferous source rocks on the Baltic part of Pomeranian Segment of the Middle Polish Trough.
S u m m a r y. Twenty Carboniferous profiles from the Baltic part of Pomeranian Segment of the Middle Polish Trough were characterized for source rock properties according the results of geochemical analyses. The best source rocks occur within Tournaisian mudstones and claystones, where TOC values reach up to 10.7 wt.%(mean 0.93 wt. %). The terrestrial kerogen type III is located at the immature/early mature contact. The analysed Westphalian and Visean strata reveal lower petroleum potential. The analysis of hydrocarbons generation from Tournaisian source rocks indicated that the generation of hydrocarbons begun between Middle Triassic and Late Jurassic, locally a perhaps in the Late Carboniferous. The generation potential was calculated from the hydrocarbon potential (1.2 to 2.2 kg HC/m3 source rock) and thickness of the source rocks, and ranges change from 20 to 365 kg HC/m2.
