Abstract
Wedge tectonics and triangle zones — basic concepts.S u m m a r y. The geometry and origin of specific tectonic structures occurring frequently at the fronts of foreland fold-and-thrust belts, are reviewed. These structures are created by the so-called wedge tectonics and include, among others, triangle zones and passive-roof duplexes. Their development is often facilitated by ductile lithological horizons (e.g. evaporites), along which regional and local detachments can nucleate. The products of wedge tectonics, being potential structural traps, are of major importance for hydrocarbon prospection.Downloads
