Abstract

Evaluation of beidellite clay insulation properties from brown coal mine “Be³chatów” by using consolidation tests.
S u m m a r y. Beidellite clay from brown coal mine “Bełchatów” is a potential material for use in insulation geo-barriers. The characteristic feature of this type of soils is its significant variability, which requires testing of permeability parameters before application as an insulation geo-layer. Coefficient of permeability of cohesive soils can be effective define on the basis of consolidation tests, which are carried out at a constant rate of loading (CL) with a simultaneous measurement of a pore water pressure. Obtained results allow specifying permeability changes related to decreasing soil porosity. Permeability analysis of green clay samples, which were taken in the area of Kleszczow Trough, is presented in this paper. Tests were carried out on natural structured samples (NNS) and prepared soil pastes. Impact of structural factors and soil saturation on obtained permeability coefficient profiles is shown and discussed in this paper on the basis of obtained consolidation test results.
