Abstract

Hydrogeological issues in selection of location for underground storage of liquid hydrocarbons in salt depositsA b s t r a c t . This paper presents hydrogeological issues important for selection of location of storage of liquid hydrocarbons in caverns in salt deposits. The safety of salt excavation depends on natural features such as an internal salt body structure and hydrogeological setting of salt structure and its surroundings. Hydrogeological conditions of the Mechelinki and Dębogórze salt deposits near the Puck Bay are discussed. This is the area of a major groundwater basin, representing the main reserve of drinking water for the whole region. The following questions are analysed: a) description of the hydrostructural and hydrodynamical conditions, b) type of the groundwater system, c) occurrence and hydrodynamics of the groundwater, d) the presence of the major groundwater basin and groundwater intakes, e) influence of seawater intrusion on groundwater quality, and f) degree of groundwater vulnerability
