Abstract

Determination of adsorbable organically bound halogens (AOX) in water and wastewater.

A b s t r a c t. The increasing use of industrially produced synthetic organohalogen (mainly chlorine) compounds has led to serious adverse effects. DDT and its metabolites as well as many other pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) may serve here as the best examples. The parameter called AOX was introduced as an alternative to individual determination of each of these compounds. AOX is the abbreviation of the sum parameter for water soluble, on-coal adsorbable organically bound halogens — chlorine, bromine and iodine. In the study conducted by the authors, determinations of the validation of AOX determination in water and wastewater were validated using column procedure and microcoulometry with the titration module and in accordance with the National Normative Aspects PN-EN ISO 9562 of June 2007. The studies made it possible to estimate the limit of determination, precision, accuracy, correctness and standard recoveries. The tests covered industrial wastewaters, municipal sewage and paper mill wastewaters. The multiX 2000 AOX analyzer and two-channel injection pump AP-2P were used in these analyses.
