Abstract

Application of digital subsurface mapping to identify geothermal potential of the Carpathian Foredeep.
A b s t r a c t. Formanyyears the Department of Fossil Fuels at the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection, AGH University of Science and Technology, has conducted the fundamental research and implementation work, including selection of optimum areas for utilization of geothermal water and energy for practical purposes. Recapitulation of the studies was published in the form of Geothermal Atlases of the Polish Lowlands (Górecki, 1990, 1995, 2006) and the Western Carpathians (Górecki, 2011). In 2012 the Geothermal Atlas of the Carpathian Foredeep (Górecki, 2012) was published, which constitute a comprehensive and exhaustive source of information on the occurrence and utilization of geothermal waters and energy in Carpathian Foredeep. Atlas represents a result of interdisciplinary, constructive cooperation
of specialists from various fields of science. The 11 selected geothermal aquifers were characterized fromthe point of view of geological setting, extent, depth and thickness of the aquifers, water temperature and mineralization, discharge of hydrogeological intakes and reservoir properties. Results of the research allowed to calculate geothermal resources and indicate the best locations for variety of utilization: balneoterapeuthic, recreation and heating. Atlas contains 214 graphic attachments, most of which are maps as a result of geological modeling carried out. The paper presents example of integrated digital subsurface mapping to identify geothermal potential of the Carpathian Foredeep
