Abstract

Microorganisms in the brines of the Mesozoic strata from the Polish Lowland.
A b s t r a c t. The paper presents the results of the research into the distribution of microorganisms in brines with the TDS (total dissolved solids) concentration of 40–80 g/dm3, located in the Paleozoic platform of the Polish Lowland. Water samples were collected from boreholes extracting water from the Jurassic and Triassic aquifers. The bacteria were detected in all water samples although the total number of microorganisms in the water samples ranged from about 11 · 103 to more than 40 · 103 cells, while their viability ranged from 13% to 100%. The samples contained both heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic, aerobic, and anaerobic bacteria as well as bacteria participating in the transformation of iron and sulphur compounds.
