Abstract

Professor Henryk Makowski, a classic of ammonite palaeobiology.
A b s t r a c t. Henryk Makowski (1910–1997), geologist and paleontologist, Professor of the University of Warsaw, is the author of the theory of sexual dimorphism in ammonites. Its announcement in 1962 became a global scientific sensation. His many-years research, Henryk Makowski conducted on the very well-preserved Callovian fauna from Łuków Podlaski, the Upper Jurassic fauna from the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, and the Upper Devonian goniatite fauna from the Holy Cross Mts. The same conclusions were drawn in 1963 by John H. Callomon, a British scientist who conducted his research independently. Discovery of sexual dimorphism in ammonites was an important palaeobiological event which had serious implications for ammonite taxonomy and ammonite-based biostratigraphy.
