Abstract

Landslides as one of the most important elements of geological hazards in Poland.
A b s t r a c t. Geohazards are defined as extreme events which occur in the lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. In Poland, landslides and earthquakes are the most dangerous for human activities. Currently, the number of recognized landslides is estimated at about 58,000. The largest damages of buildings and other infrastructures are registered in the years of 2000–2001 and 2010, which were caused by a high amount of rainfall in the spring–summer period. In an attempt to prevent localization of new facilities on danger zones, cataloguing of landslides has been made. Moreover, perilous objects are monitored with different methods.
Another threat is earthquakes, observed in southern Poland, along the Teisseyre-Tronquist Zone, which cause damage of buildings. Apart from earthquakes of tectonic origin, equally hazardous are movements that cause deformation of the earth’s surface, triggered by mining exploitation.
