A b s t r a c t. The Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute in Warsaw will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary. Throughout this time, especially during a few decades after World War II, this institution fulfilled a very important role in the country’s life. The author mentions outstanding Polish scientists: Prof. Ludwik Chrobak and Prof. Kazimierz Smulikowski, to whom he owes his choice of profession, and his fascination with the forms of inanimate vnature. Recalling Professor Smulikowski’s autobiography, “Droga po kamieniach”, he highlights the memories of participants and witnesses of various events and human attitudes, important for the history of the Polish Geological Institute. He also draws attention to Lviv, a key city for the later flowering of geological research in Poland.
