Abstract

The problems with the use of raw rock material during the early Piast period in Poland.
A b s t r a c t. The article presents and characterizes stone building material of the monumental buildings from
the beginning of the early Polish state during the reign of the Piast dynasty. It was found that the stone architecture was built of boulders, predominantly quartzites, gneisses and granites. Boulders accounted for 98% of all stone building material. The acquisition of the building material was carried out mainly through the collecting on the surface. The deforestation works that are believed to have been carried out mostly to gain land for agriculture and stock raising facilitated the process of building early monumental buildings in Poland. In the article, the author hypothesizes that burning and grubbing of forest land could be made not only for those reasons, but also for the need of construction works.
