Abstract


Professor Stanisław Sokołowski, a classic geologist of the Tatra Mountains.
A b s t r a c t. Professor Stanisław Sokołowski (1900–1990), a graduate of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, was a distinguished Carpathian geologist, particularly meritorious in research of the Tatra Massif. He specialized in geological mapping and tectonics, conducting research on the Sub-Tatric nappes, was a co-author and co-editor of geological maps of the Tatra Mts. and the Carpathians, and the author of synthetic tectonic reports on these mountain ranges. He worked for many years as a professor at the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw. Stanisław Sokołowski was one of the contributors to the first international Tectonic map of Europe (1962–1964). He was a geological expert in the field of dam construction and landslide hazard, and a researcher of thermal waters in the Tatra region. As a soldier, Stanisław Sokołowski participated in the defense of Lviv in 1918, during the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920, and in the defensive war against the German and Soviet aggression in 1939.
