Abstract
Debate on the Polish Geological Survey – a bit of history.
A b s t r a c t. During the period of intellectual ferment in 1980–1981 the “Solidarity” Commitee at the Geological Institute elaborated and proposed main guidelines for a reorganization of the Polish Geological Survey. The project, following wide discussion in the Polish geological community, was designed according to standards implemented in leading Western countries. The proposal assumed that the survey should maintain a high scientific level and ought to be independent from any direct political influence or pressure of economic lobbies. While organization details proposed in the “Solidarity” project may be disputable, its general premises remain up to date.
