Abstract

Hydrocompaction process monitoring system exemplified by a physical model.A b s t r a c t. Loess constitutes a building site for over 6% area of Poland. Almost the entire area of its occurrence undergoes construction development. In the event of their sudden irrigation, a rapid reduction in the volume of the soil occurs. This process is known as hydrocompression. It is particularly dangerous in urban areas, where there is bulk land next to loess. The increase in humidity of these soils results in large changes instrength and deformation characteristics. At present, most construction damages caused by the phenomenon of hydrocompression are not the result of typical long-term moistening of soils by rainwater, but especially byerrors in development: leaky sewerage, rainwater discharge to the ground or waterworks failure. The project encompassed the test of an original subsidence monitoring system in a specially designed physical model fit for this purpose. The aforementioned system was created on the basis of the ARDUINO platform that enabled monitoring of subsidence with an accuracy of 0.2 mm.
