Abstract

Professor Jan Nowak – creator of the first synthesis on the tectonics of Poland.
A b s t r a c t. Jan Nowak (1880–1940), Polish geologist, graduated from the University of Lviv, professor at the
Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Initially, he worked on the Cretaceous stratigraphy and palaeontology of Upper Cretaceous cephalopods, their systematics and phylogeny. In parallel, he developed an interest in the tectonics
of the Alps and the Carpathians, as well as in petroleum geology. Jan Nowak was the creator of the original concept of tectogenesis of the Carpathian flysch belt (Nowak, 1927). In later years, he conducted geological research in the Polish Lowlands and created the first synthesis on the tectonics of Poland. His research in the lowland areas was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II and death following his imprisonment in a German concentration camp.
