Abstract

Geological Library PGI-NRI in the second 50. anniversary. It’s like a journey through time – from the card catalog to the loan module.
A b s t r a c t. The Geological Library of the Polish Geological Institute has been in existence since 1919 and is one of the largest scientific libraries in Poland. It collects and provides books, periodicals and cartographic materials in the field of Earth sciences. Together with its six branch libraries located in Gdańsk, Kielce, Kraków, Sosnowiec, Szczecin and Wrocław, it is a very important support for geologists dealing both with applied and academic investigations. Apart from many interesting 19th-century publications, the library resources include special collection of old prints from the 17th and 18th centuries, which constitute the most valuable part of the collection. A unique item is also the Retrospective Polish Geological Bibliography, which contains a review of geological literature from 1750 to 1950. Since 1922, the Library has also been developing the current Polish Geological Bibliography, which records all geological literature of Poland published in the country and abroad. During the last 50 years of the operation, huge changes have been taken in the functioning of the Library. Currently, the Library is being digitalized, meeting the expectations of the scientific society. Readers, at their work desk, can use the on-line catalog of books and journals with free access to many publications.
