Abstract

PRELIMINARY RAW MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PLIOCENE CLAYS FROM THE SZAMOTUŁY REGION Summary The article presents a short outline of geology and a preliminary characteristic of the Pliocene clays which occur in the overburden of the brown coal deposit in the region of Szamotuły. The preliminary laboratory examinations of the Pliocene clay samples made from two bore holes have shown that these clays, except for certain portions with increased contents of noxious components as CaO and MgSo4, are good ceramic raw material which can be of use in production of materials characterized by a high compressive strength. A considerable content of Al2O3 in certain portions of these clays suggests a possibility of using them as a complementary raw material for production of aluminium oxide by means of Bretsznajder method. The Pliocene days are, owing to their considerable thickness, thin overburden, great distribution and good physic-chemical properties, of considerable importance as a raw material for building ceramics industry; and their complex use, together with the brown coal seams can distinctly decrease the costs of exploitation of these mineral raw materials.
