Abstract

LOESS-LIKE FORMATIONS IN THE SĄDECKA KOTLINA AS CERAMIC RAW MATERIALS

Summary
The loess-like formations strongly resemble Ioesses, and are characterized by the predominance of silt fraction, that consist mainly of quartz grains, over other fractions, as well as by differentiated content of the individual fractions in the vertical section. On the other hand, they differ from loesses in having, from a twofold to fivefold, greater content of clay fraction than Ioesses and in lacking carbonates, or in having their small amount. In contrast with the Ioesses they are a suitable ceramic raw material, characterized by average plasticity and average dessication shrinkage (6,4%); it is well fitted for use in production of elements characterized by porous structure and by a strength amounting to 100-150 kG/cm2, as well as in production of building and road clinkers. The loess-like formations are a high-fusible raw material that shows, at the temperature above 1250°C, a tendency to swell.
