Abstract

PERSPECTIVES IN SEARCH FOR ROCK SALT DEPOSITS IN THE VICINITY OR TARNÓW Summary The prospecting works recently carried out in the vicinity of Tarnów allowed the present author to study evaporate series of Tortonian age. It has been ascertained that the evaporate series found to occur in the area considered is developed in two facies, i.e. sulphate and chloride facies. The series appears in two tectonical units - in the autochthonous Tortonian deposits and in Tortonian•the deposits overthrust in front .of the Carpathian flysch. The highest industrial importance may be related to the evaporate series found in the overthrust Tortonian deposits. This series, from 120 to 400 metres in thickness, occurs at a depth of about 1000 - 1600 metres, consisting mainly of variously grained rock salts, grey in colour. To a lesser degree are found also clay salts and clay anhydrite intercalations.
