COLOURING ROLE OF IRON OXIDES IN THE LOWER SILESIAN KAOLINES

Summary
The results of studies on the occurrence of iron in kaolines from various Lower Silesian deposits and their colouring are presented. The kaolines examined show 1 – 8% of Fe2O3, 1 – 3% out of which is combined. A part of the combined Fe2O3 is present in the structure of' micas, whereas about 1% occurs in the kaolinite. The colouring of the Lower Silesian kaolines is mainly dependent on the amount of free iron oxides arid hydroxides; kaolines devoid of free Fe2O3 exhibit a similar white colouring. No relationship has been noticed between the type of the mother rock from which the kaolin originated and the combined iron content in the kaoline.
