STRENGTH VS. SHAPE OF JOINT SURFACE IN UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION OF SANDSTONE
Summary
Interdependence between strength values and shape of joint surfaces resulting from uniaxial compression perpendicular to the bedding was proven on the basis of experiments concerning strength of Lower Jurassic sandstones to compression. Samples, being in air-dry state, saturated with capillary water, or in a state of complete water saturation, were subjected to compression in air or in water. The observations made were related to the thesis concerning the existence of obscured, invisible places and zones in rocks, where there is decrease of strength
