Abstract

X-RAY STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF MINERAL OF MIXED, LAYERED MONTMORILLONITE-ILLITE STRUCTURE FROM MILOWICE

Summary
The Na-montmorillonite and mixed-layer montmorillonite-illite (M/I) mineral exist in carboniferous bentonites from coal mine Milowice (Upper SlIesian Coal Basin). In this paper the crystal structure of M/I mineral in dry condition and after being saturated with glycerine was described. This structure was investigated by means MacEvan's probability function WR. Two kinds of M/I mineral (12,4/10 and 15,4/10) in investigated bentonites were found. The sizes of the 12,4/10 kind grains were smaller than one micron, while of the 15,4/10 kind grains were greater (the Na-montmorillonite occurs in the most fine grain fraction). In montmorillonite layers of 12,4/10 kind mainly Na+ ions were observed as the exchangeable cations, in 15,4/10 kind - Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. The layers M and I were randomly interstratified in both kinds of mineral examined. The coefficients of occurring of sequence's layers probability PM, PI, PMI, PIM PMM and PII were indicated.
