Abstract

RESULTS OF ISOTOPE STUDIES ON SULPHUR FROM MINERAL SPRINGS IN THE POLISH AREA Summary Isotope composition of sulphur of spring origin was studied for the first time in Poland. Isotopes δS34 occurring in sulphuretted hydrogen and in ions SO4-- from waters of some mineral springs from the Podkarpacie, Sudety Mts, and Kujawy were studied. In two instances the studies also comprised native sulphur precipitated in springs. The results show that isotope δS34 content in ions SO4—varies from +12.2 to +36.1‰, and in sulphuretted hydrogen from -15.6 to -2,8‰; in the latter case, H2S from spring at Solecki Zdrój, with δS34 equalling +10.6‰, is the only exception. Values δS34 obtained for native sulphur are somewhat lower than those obtained for H2S from the same springs. The data obtained may be of great importance for establishing primary sources of sulphur occurring in the studied waters and for the knowledge of the processes of sulphides reduction to sulphureted hydrogen.
