Abstract

MASS SPECTROMETRY AS A SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH METHOD

Summary
The mass spectrometry method is widely applied both in scientific research and in current practise. In the present paper the principles and applicability of analysis of ion beams by means of magnetic and electric polars are discussed. Particular attention should be paid to application of mass spectrometry in nuclear physics, due to the possibility of making highly accurate estimations of atomic masses values. Other applications include analysis of nuclear reaction products formed in the course of the reaction, i.e., the beam method. Analysis of isotopes of persistant elements occurring in the Earth's crust may be applied to geological studies. The mass spectrometry was initially applied in solving problems of atomic physics, and ionization phenomena, including problems of ionizations in gases and on surface of solid bodies. The newest problems of that discipline, such as implantation of ions into semi-conductors, and mutual interaction of ions and crystalline network, are also discussed.
