Abstract

GEOLOGICAL STUDIES OF "METEORITE" CRATERS FROM NÖRDLINGER RIES (FRG) AND MORASKO (POLAND) Summary Borehole drilled to the depth of 1206 m in the bottom of Nördlinger Ries depression (Bavaria) unequivocally evidenced the meteoritic origin of this crater. The aim of the borehole, which was to reach the crater bottom, was not fulfilled. At present it is assumed that the bottom may be situated at the depth of 4 or even 5 km (H. Steinert, 1974). It is worth noting that there are subcircular depressions in Poland in the Poznań area, which, according to the meteorite researcher Dr. J. Pokrzywnicki (1964, 1971), may be the result of impact of meteorites which took place a few thousand years ago. Detailed studies of the depressions should be undertaken as there is only about a dozen , undoubtful meteorite craters known all over the whole world (M. Schwarzbach, 1970; S. R. Brzostkiewicz, 1970; J. Pokrzywnicki, 1971).
