Abstract

X-RAY-STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF MINERAL OF MIXED PACKET-MONTMORILLONITE-ILLITE STRUCTURE FROM MILOWICE Summary In the previous paper (,,Przegląd Geologiczny", no. 6, 1973), the studies on mineral with mixed packet structure from the mine Milowice (Upper Silesian Coal Basin) were described. The studies, by the use of Brown and MacEwan's method and using trioectaedric factor of packet structure IF1I2, showed that this mineral is built of loosely packed montmorillonite and illite packets. In the present paper the probability function of the occurrence of W(R) packets in this mineral was again calculated on the basis of the same diffractometric measurements. In the calculations, the factor of structure of dioectaedric packets was used. It was found that this mineral consists of three kinds of packets: 10 Å, 12.4 Å and 15.4Å. The packets are randomly arranged in the direction perpendicular to x-y planes. In submicronic fraction, packets of the distance d001 = 12.4 Å prevail quantitatively over those of the distance 15.4 Å, whereas in the fraction of submicronic grains the packets of the distance 15.4 Å prevail. In illite packets there is a tendency to orderly arrangement of the MIMIN type, whereas montmorillonite packets show a tendency to form zones of the MMM type in crystallites.
