Abstract
UPPER AND MIDDLE SUBTATRIC NAPPES IN THE TATRA MTS.
Summary
Two subtatric nappes, i.e. lower (Kriżna) and upper (Chocz) nappes were hitherto distinguished in the Tatra Mts. However, in the Inner Carpathians of Slovakia it appears that the lower upper nappe corresponds to the middle subtatric nappe, which is accompanied by upper subtatric nappe. The fauna and flora (teutloporelles, ammonites, nautiloids, and daonelles) found by the present author in the Chochołowska valley are of distinct Mediterranean habitus typical of nappes more southerly than the Chocz nappe, i.e. of upper subtatric nappe. The upper subtatric nappe comprises Furkaska and Koryciska seals forming a partial nappe. Besides the upper subtatric nappe, it is also possible to distinguish the middle subtatric nappe in the Tatra Mts. The latter would comprise Siwa Woda partial nappe recently distinguished by the present author (Chocz nappe), Kończysta and Brama Kantaka seales, and Upłaz seal (Vepor nappe). Thus, it is possible to distinguish lower, middle, and upper subtatric nappes, or, more precisely, groups of nappes, within the whole Central Carpathians including the Tatra Mts.
