Abstract

THE PRESENCE OF A RARE FOSSIL – LIMULUS - IN THE LIAS OF THE HOLY CROSS MTS

Summary
Lias deposits of the Holy Cross Mts are generally poor in marine fossils, nevertheless they yield several forms very rare in other regions. The latter include several new trace fossils and an unique foot-print of five-toe reptilian (W. Karaszewski 1973, 1974, 1975) as well as imprint of limulus found in Middle Lias deposits nearby Szydłowiec just before the start of the IInd w.w. The imprints at Lower Jurassic limulus are extremely rare and up to the present there are known only 2 specimens from the Franconian Alb and 1 from Scania (J. Wincierz 1960). The specimen from Poland was markedly better preserved than the remaining ones and almost twice as large as those from the Franconian Alb. Unfortunately, it was burnt down along with other collections of the Warsaw University during bombing of Warsaw in September 1939.
