Abstract

THE OCCURRENCE OF CORUNDUM IN THE LOWER SILESIA

Summary
Lower Silesia corundum, and particularly its precious varietes (ruby and sapphire) are known since XV c. Corundum is here reported from both primary and secondary (alluvial) deposits. The richest occurrence is related to pegmatites from the area of Karpacz in Karkonosze Mts. The other principal corundom-bearing locality is related to amphibolitized eclogite lenses occurring in granulites from Bystrzyca Górna (Sowie Mts). In the latter locality a few ruby crystals were found. Corundum is fairly common in Tertiary and Quaternary river alluvia. The occurrence of ruby and sapphire in gold-bearing sands from the areas of Złotoryja, Legnickie Pole, Mikołajowice, Wądroż Wielki and Lwówek is known for a long time. Moreover, star-like corundum is known from gravels of Izerka and Hala Izerska valleys, as well as from Kwisa river alluvia from the area of Leśna.
