Abstract

SEISMIC STRUCTURE OF EARTH'S CRUST AND UPPER MANTLE ALONG THE INTERNATIONAL PROFILE VII IN THE LIGHT OF STUDIES BY DEEP SEISMIC SOUNDINGS METHOD

Summary
The paper presents final results of refraction investigations of the earth's crust and upper mantle along international profile VII in the region of Poland. The profile intersects the Sudetes, the fore-Sudetic region and the Old European Platform with its marginal zone. It was found that the crustal thickness changes approximately from 30km in the "Odra" deep fault zone to 50 km in the zone of the Teisseyre-Tornquist line (marginal zone of the European Platform). A series of deep fractures dividing the crust into blocks and smaller segments of diversified physical structure was found. The deep fractures located in the zone of the Teisseyre-Tornquist line are of fundamental importance for delineating the European Platform boundary in this region. The physical structure of the earth's crust in the zone of the Teisseyre-Tornquist 'line was found to have a clearly anomalous nature, being similar to crustal structures of intracontinental rift systems. In the fore-Sudetic region, the upper and Lower boundaries of the transition zone between the crust and the upper mantle were accurately determined. An attempt was made to interpret this zone on the basis of transformation processes of gabbro-eclogite type. More detailed results were given in papers A. Guterch et al. (15, 16).
