PRODUCTIVENESS OF THE LOWER CRETACEOUS IN THE POLISH FLYSCH CARPATHIANS AND ITS PROSPECTING PERSPECTIVES
Summary
The results obtained in bore holes made to search for oil and gas deposits in the Lower Cretaceous of the Polish Flysch Carpathians proved the occurrence of these deposits in sandstones of Lower Cretaceous age, developed in the Węglówka (Sub-Silesian) facies. Bore holes made in the area of the Silesian unit to investigate the productiveness of the Lower Cretaceous sandstones have so far not given the results of commercial value.
According to St. Wdowiarz and L. Koszarski (1958) the facial development of beds in the Grabownica fold is thought to be similar to the Węglówka facies, this being a key to search for oil and gas deposits in the Lower Cretaceous strata in the Carpathian area. If the best results are obtained in the Lower Cretaceous beds (Węglówka, Grabownica, Wola Jasienicka) developed in the Węglówka facies, the further prospections should be conducted just in the Sub-Silesian unit, particularly in the area stretching between Grabownica and Węglówka, as well as east of Grabownica and east of Węglówka. Owing to a good isolation of the Lower Cretaceous beds of the Sub-Silesian unit by the Węglówka mars and by the Silesian unit overfold, the area under discussion may contain oil and gas deposits of considerable resources.
The authors are of the opinion that the Grabownica fold belongs, when both facial and tectonical viewpoints are taken into account, to the Sub-Silesian (Węglówka) unit.
