Abstract

ABSOLUTE GEOCHRONOLOGY AS A SOURCE OF DATA ON TECTONIC PROCESSES

Summary
Geochronological determinations may yield important information not only on the so called rock ages but also on the rate of geodynamic processes, provided the sampling pattern expresses a clearly defined problem to be solved. The point is illustrated by a review of papers in which geochronological data were used as an argument in favour of continental drift, to estimate the rate of sea-floor spreading, the age of postorogenic uplift of a mountain chain, and the rate of such an uplift.
