Abstract

MICROFACIES ANALYSES OF LOWER TORTONIAN LITHOTHAMNIUM LIMESTONES OF THE WÓJCZA-PIŃCZÓW RANGE

Summary
The paper presents the results of a detailed petrological analysis of Lower Tortonian Lithothamnium limestones from natural outcrops and quarries in southern margins of the Holy Cross Mts. The studies made it possible to reconstruct the mineral corn. position and internal structure of these rocks as well as the regularities in their variability. On the basis of the results of micropaleontological analyses it was possible to select typical features of the rocks, contributing to the microfacies image of rock assemblages. The analysis made it possible to distinguish principal microfacies types and several varietes of rocks. The subdivision appeared to be a usefull tool for identification of the origin of Lithothamnium limestones used for the construction of monumental buildings in the Wiślica area. The analysis comprised rocks samples from pre-Romanian church at Wiślica, a complex of palatial buildings from the top part of the city island and some samples from stony ornament of Gothic belfry built by Jan Długosz about 1460-1470. The results of the analysis have shown that identifications of the rock material are reliable if they are based on a comparative analysis including the features controlling sedimentary conditions in time and place of origin of the rooks; in the present case - the factors controlling environmental conditions prevailing in the sedimentary basin of the Wójcza - Pińczów area in the Early Tortonian times.
