Abstract

GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF SULPHUR OCCURRENCE IN THE MIOCENE DEPOSITS, VICINITIES OF RYBNIK

Summary
A series of clays and of marly claystones containing numerous concretions of native sulphur was encountered when drilling at Rogów, approximately 15 km SW of Rybnik, in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The sulphur occurs within the gypsum horizon of the Lower Tortonian (Fig. 1). Probably, it was formed due to the alteration of gypsums and anhydrites, influenced by gases migrating. from the Carboniferous formations (mainly by CH4). The sulphur is found mainly at the fault zones (Fig. 2) and in the sites where schlier (arenaceous-clayey) deposits of the Skawina beds occur immediately under the gypsum horizon.
