Abstract
NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF SULPHUR MINING IN POLAND
Summary
Formerly, four centres of sulphur production existed in Poland, i.e. Silesian centre (Pszów, Kokoszyce), Cracow centre (Swoszowice, Posądza), Kielce centre (Czarkowy, Czajków, Wola Wiśniewska) in the west, and Lubień, Dźwiniacz, Truskawiec, Pomiarki in the east. Sulphur mines were located in the northern marginal zone of the Carpathian fore-deep, except for the mines at Dźwiniacz, Troskawiec and Pomiarki, situated in southern marginal zone of this fore-deep.
It was also established that the beginning of sulphur exploitation in the oldest centre (mine Swoszowice, near Cracow) goes back to the year 1415; thus 550 years are over from the time of the first sulphur production in Poland.
Rough estimates show that from the beginning of sulphur exploitation at Swoszowice, up to the liquidation of the last old sulphur mine in 1921 (mine Posądza), approximately 150 000-200 000 t sulphur. During the period from 1921 to 1957, the sulphur mining did not exist in Poland. In 1957, exploitation of sulphur-bearing limestones began at Piaseczno, on the sulphur deposit discovered in 1956 by Prof. Dr St. Pawłowski, the worker of the Geological Institute in Warsaw. Another sulphur deposits was discovered by him at Machów, in 1953; the deposit is being stripped, at present. At the period mentioned above, the second stage of sulphur mining development began in Poland, and already in 1964 the production of sulphur reached 300 000 t.
