Abstract

THE PODHALE FLYSCH SANDSTONES AS BUILDING MATERIALS Summary The paper presents a possibility of using the Podhale flysch sandstones for building purposes. The sandstones under consideration are calcareous, blue-grey in colour, and of Eocene age. They occur in three stratigraphical series, the so-called Zakopane, Chochołów and Ostrea series. In numerous buildings of the Podhale region mainly sandstones of the Chochołów series have been used, those of the Zakopane series have rarely been applied, and those of the Ostrea series only exceptionally. The studies on physical and technical properties of the Podhale flysch sandstones have shown that this material may be used for making non-habitable architectural constructions, underpinnings, cornices, socles, steps, external and internal stone slab facings, a.o. In addition, the author presents also areas in which exploitation of the Podhale flysch sandstones may be conducted on a larger scale.
