Abstract

PRELIMINARY RESULTS AND PERSPECTIVES OF SEARCH FOR CRUSHED STONE DEPOSITS IN THE OLSZTYN REGION

Summary
In the Olsztyn region there are great possibilities of finding the considerable amounts of natural crushed stone in deposits related to the Pleistocene formations and forms, in particular to those of the youngest Baltic glaciation. The crushed stone here is represented by mixed rock material containing various quantities of sand reaching even up to 70 per cent. The resources documented in the years 1950-1960 amounted approximately 4 millions m3, however, much of them are already dug out.
Here, three fundamental types of crushed stone may be distinguished: frontal-morainic, fluvio-glacial, and terrace-fluviatile. A discovery of considerable deposits in 1961-1962 at Grzybiny and Komorniki (Działdowo district) is worthy of stress, here. On the analysis of drill materials and on geomorphology, 37 regions have been prepared for geological reconnaissance. The prospectings carried out at the end of 1963 gave positive results and lead to a discovery of new large deposit near Giławy-Rusko, at the boundary of the Olsztyn and Szczytno districts.
The total resources of crushed stone in all the regions considered amount, according to the preliminary calculations, some tens millions of m3; a closer reconnaissance may, however, considerably increase the resources so far calculated.
