Abstract

INVESTIGATIONS OF CLAY MINERALS IN ENGINEERING GEOLOGY Summary On account of considerable influence of clayey fraction upon physical, mechanical and technological properties of grounds in fundamental geological-engineering investigations (Figs. l and 2), a special attention is paid to the mineral composition of this fraction, in particular to the contents of clay and colloidal , minerals in the individual sub-fractions of clay fraction. Without these structural elements, it is not possible to put a physically substantiated theory of mechanism of changes appearing in ground, under influence of factors reacting on this ground. Without such a theory we also cannot elaborate an uniform theory of predictions, a problem being one of the principal purposes in engineering geology. The present work deals with the results of studies on composition and contents of clayey minerals in most common compact grounds in Poland, i. e. boulder clays, varved clays, loesses, Poznań clays, as well as Upper Cretaceous marls and opokes.
