Abstract

ROCK SALT DEPOSIT IN THE LEGNICA – GŁOGÓW COPPER BASIN

Summary
Drilling works connected with search for copper and bitumens in the area of the Fore-Sudetic monocline have resulted in recognition of a rock salt deposit in the Zechstein Z1 Stage. The deposit was found in a belt running from NW to SE between Polkowice and Głogów and covering the area over 100 km2. The map (Fig. 2) and two geological sections (Figs 3, 4) show the shape of the deposit reconstructed on the basis of borehole data - on the basis of a graphic synthesis of numerous borehole profiles. The deposit generally stretches in NW-SE direction, gently dipping (3-6°) to NE. It has a form of a layer of the thickness changing in a lenticular way as it wedges from about 200 m on the NE to zero on SW. The deposit consists of a series of layers of petrologically variable rocks salts. The salts are generally medium- to coarse-grained, ,in some places nonuniformly grained, white to dark-gray or gray-yellow in colour. The salt yielding at least 97.5% NaCl is the main rock forming component. The geological-mining setting of the deposit is suitable for various modes of exploitation.
