Abstract

GEOLOGLICAL STRUCTURE OF CENTRAL PART OF THE LUBLIN COAL BASIN Summary The control part of the Lublin Coal Basin (Figs. 1-2) is situated in the area of uplifted Precambrian Platform. This geological setting determines the geology, (? geological model) and especially the style of tectonics and thickness and lithological-facies development of Paleozoic formations including Carboniferous formation in this area. The Carboniferous begins with Upper Visean strata, 79.50-114.50 m thick, represented by marine deposits with limnic intercalations overlying Old Red series. The Upper Visean is concordantly overlied by the Lower Namurian characterized by similar lithological development and classic sedimentary cyclicity, 160.0-236.50 m in thickness. Upwards. in sedimentary continuity, occur Upper Namurian (B and C) strata 209.40-383.0 m thick, represented by terrestial deposits with marine intercalations (Fig. 4). First coal seams of economical, importance appear In the Upper Namurian. The Westfalian A-B is represented by monotonous series of alternating claystones, siltstones and coals with occasional sandstone interecalations (Fig. 4); the thickness of this series is estimated at 461.50 m. The last marine horizon (counting from below) is found in the basal part of the Westfalian. The Carboniferous is overlied by the Mesozoic (Middle Jurassic) strata. Carboniferous strata are involved in a smooth, asymmetric syncline NW –SE oriented (Fig. 3) and cut by longitudinal and transversal faults. The Westfalian (Lublin beds), which are the main productive series of this region, comprise 24 coal seams of economic importance, 0.70 to 2.60 m thick. The seams are usually variable in structure and quality of coal. Some of them are, however, characterized by highly advantageous qualitative parameters. Metamorphism of coals is of zonal character in the vertical. The surface of zone of coking coal is not limited to a single stratigraphic horizon.
