Abstract

PROBLEM OF SEARCH FOR SEDIMENTARY IRON ORE DEPOSITS IN THE SUDETIC CALEDONIDES Summary In all periods of development of geological structure of Sudetes there existed favourable conditions to form and to accumulate the iron ores. As so far established, the best possibilities in searching for new deposits in this region are, however, connected With the Precambrian and the old Palaeozoic deposits. In these formations there are known metamorphic deposits of indefinite genesis, which are built up mainly of magnetite occurring here at the boundary between amphibolites and crystalline limestones. Moreover, there are here also epigenetic deposits, mainly hydrothermal ones, connected with the Hercynian intrusions. Their commercial importance, as it results of the mining and metallurgical practice, is, however, of lesser degree. Basing on the literature data, the author analyzes the syngenetical iron ore deposits of Barrandian in Thuringia and Saxony, and concludes, on his own observations that the area of Sudetic Caledonides may also be prolific in search for deposits of this type. The proofs of this are: lithofacial resemblance of the rock series constituting the Sudetic Caledonides, to the areas mentioned above; oolitic sedimentation; traces showing redeposition of material; and occurrence of thick rock series of volcanic origin. More detailed studies should be carried out on chlorite schists (tufogene schists) and quartzite series occurring in the Kaczawskie Mts, and within the synclinal regions of the Fore-Sudetic block.
