Abstract

DEVELOPMENT OF INVESTIGATIONS ON GEOLOGICAL AND DEPOSIT STRUCTURES OF THE UPPER SILESIAN COAL BASIN

Summary
The article presents, in a chronological way, the most important Polish papers dealing with the productive Carboniferous, papers which mostly influenced development of the geological works in the area under discussion.
Before the World War II, the geological activity in the Upper Silesia was led by specialists of the State Geological Institute, especially as concerns flora and fauna. These studies were basis to elaborate, within the Polish part of the basin, the stratigraphical subdivision of the Carboniferous, which was, at that time, more modern one, as those elaborated before.
After the war, the studies were continued on a larger scale, and gave much new data concerning development and stratigraphy of the Upper Silesian Carboniferous, as well as presence of coal of this latter. On this basis, maps of total thickness of balance coal seams, and maps of coal types in the Upper Silesian Basin were elaborated.
