Abstract

THE OCCURRENCE OF PRECIOUS AND ORNAMENTAL STONES IN DETRITAL ROCKS IN THE LOWER SILESIA

Summary
Both primary and secondary deposits of precious and ornamental stones are known from the Lower Silesia. The concentration of the precious and ornamental stones in secondary deposits is usually of negligible economic significance at present so they may be only considered interesting from the mineralogical standpoint. Petroarcheological studies have shown that the stones were used for ornamental purposes since the Neolithic Age, mostly due to the easiness of isolating them from loose detrital rocks forming the secondary deposits. Three groups of minerals and rocks are distinguished and discussed: (1) precious stones as corundum, some varietes of zircon, spinel, garnets, chrysoberyls, topazes, iserines, amethysts and rock crystal, (2) valuable stones of organic origin - amber and pearls, (3) ornamental stones - lidites, jaspers and carnelians.
