Abstract


ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS USED FOR .CONSTRUCTING EARTH DAM IN THE LIGHT OF GEOPHYSICAL STUDIES

Summary
The paper presents the results of seismic and electric studies carried out for evaluation of physical parameters of soil used for construction of earth dam of water reservoir at Wieliszew before its infilling. The seismic surveys were carried out with the use of the seismic "radiographic" method which makes it possible to record first impulses of elastic waves. On the basis of the results obtained the dam section surveyed was divided into zones differing in velocities of direct wave (Fig. 4). The zones distinguished indicate differences in consolidation of soil medium forming the earth dam. The electric surveys involved sounding and electric resistance profilling. The results have shown a marked influence of humidity and, partly, dimensions and shape of the dam on electric resistance values obtained. On the basis of the analysis of curves of electric profilling and isoohm maps and cross-sections (Figs. 5-8) the dam section surveyed was divided into 3 zones characterized by a gradual increase in resistance values from SW to NE as well as to find a marked belt of minimum values of electric resistance which stretches along the whole dam.
