Abstract

STUDIES ON STABILITY OF HEAPS IN THE BROWN COAL OPEN-CUT MINE, KONIN REGION

Summary
The paper deals with the results of preliminary engineering-geological studies concerning heaps of the Gosławice and the Pątnów open-cut mines. Analysing the field observations, laboratory investigations and computations, the authors have stated that main influence on the stability of a heap is due to the water, the presence of Poznań clay admixtures in the heap mass and the character of the substratum or of the lowermost bed of heap.
To obtain the greater stability of the heaps, it is recommended to make even their top surfaces and to put on a net of shallow open ditches draining off the atmospheric waters. To avoid the filling by mud and the additional decreasing of infiltration of atmospheric waters, it is suitable to cover the surface of heap by vegetation. Due to the admixtures of iron sulphides, the presence of the Poznań clays in the soil zone is not favourable for vegetation. Therefore, it is necessary to form here the soil zone of boulder clays characteristic of their favourable soil-forming properties.
