Abstract

GEOLOGICAL-ENGINEERING PROBLEM OF DAM CONSTRUCTION IN THE AREA OF THE UPPER SAN RIVER VALLEY

Summary
The article deals with the geological-engineering works being carried on in the area of the San river valley to prepare a project of cascade constructions on the San river and other Carpathian rivers.
The purpose of these works was to project properly the individual dams and to adapt these dams to the rocks, in which they are to be constructed.
The methods of geological-engineering studies were not different from those generally known and applied in other domains of geological sciences. It was required only the great preciseness in recording and interpreting the geological phenomena there.
The investigatory works relied upon:
l. Surface mapping and profiling the natural and artificial exposures,
2. Mining and prospecting works (rotary drillings, band drillings, diggings),
3. Geophysical surveys,
4. Studies on water-holding capacity, concrete-holding capacity of the rock mass and sticking of concrete to the substratum rocks,
5. Laboratory tests - determination of petrographical and chemical properties, chemism of waters a.o.
