Abstract

PREVIOUS RESULTS OF STUDY ON UTILITY OF THE DIAGENETIC DIATOMACEOUS SLATES (DIATOMITES) FROM LESZCZAWKA, NEAR PRZEMYŚL

Summary
Discovery of the diatomaceous slates of a "diatomite" type existing within the Sub-Carpathian Cretaceous sediments in the vicinity of Leszczawka, near Przemyśl, has called an interest of an industrial character.
Petrographic-mineralogical studies have shown that the varieties of slates at Leszczawka have the same microscopical features as have the consolidated diatomaceous earths there. The consolidation might have taken place probably as a result of diagenetic silicification of the hydroopal in to the chalcedony. On the basis of the results obtained during examination, the rocks have been determined as diagenetic diatomaceous slates.
Physico-chemical investigations of the varieties of slates did not corroborate the properties characteristic for the typical light diatomaceous earths (diatomites). Therefore, these raw materials cannot be used as absorbents of filter media, neither as materials for water glass production, nor as hydraulic cement admixtures, too.
At present, the study is being made on utilization of the light in colour variety of slate for production of thermalite bricks and of the dark burnt varieties, as light crushed material, for both the construction and the thermo-isolating concretes; the raw variety of slates, dark in colour, may be used as filling material for cell concrete. Results of these studies will decide upon possibility of utilizing the slates from Leszczawka as a mass building material.
