Abstract

CLAY RAW MATERIALS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION CERAMICS IN THE LUBLIN DISTRICT

Summary
Among the clay raw materials used for the construction ceramics, existing in the Lublin district, are:
a) Jurassic days, occurring at Łuków (S of Siedlce) forming a big ice-drift block in the Pleistocene, and having only the local importance;
b) Tertiary clays being a raw material of good quality, occurring in the marine facies as the Krakowiec clays (Miocene) and in the continental facies in both the Włodawa and the Chełm Lubelski areas;
c) Pliocene clays in the vicinities of Stoczek Łukowski (SW of Siedlce);
d) clays and marginal lake silts occurring in the northern part of the district;
e) loess silts (lacustrine silts) to be found in the vicinities of Włodawa, Chełm, Bychawa, Białopole, Frampol and Biłgoraj;
f) loesses, as a lean, non attractive raw material for the construction ceramics, containing, however always too much of CaCO3;
g) boulder clays of lower quality, occurring particularly in the northern part of the Lublin district, and the alluvial clays appearing in the valleys of the big rivers.
The most perspective raw material for the construction ceramics in this district are the marginal lake clays and silts occurring in the area stretching from Puławy in the NE (6) direction to Radzymin and then to Biała Podlaska and Janów, and the clayey loesses in the southern part of the Lublin Upland, as well as Krakowiec clays (Sandomierz Dale) in case if they have some varieties, which do not contain the sulphates being dissolvable in water.
